News: Flat owners responsible for repair services of their homes

Aug 6, 2019

Owners of HDB flats are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the fixtures and fittings within their units and can engage their preferred contractors to carry out the necessary work, said the Ministry of National Development in Parliament on Monday (5 August).

But while HDB does not provide repair services to flat owners, it recognises that some owners, such as the less-mobile or elderly residents who live alone, may need extra help.

As such, various avenues are available for these residents to seek help.

“For urgent assistance on maintenance matters, such as power trips that occur after office hours, residents can contact their Town Council’s Essential Maintenance Service Unit (EMSU), who can provide advice over the phone or recommend an electrician that the flat owner can engage,” said the ministry in responding to MP Saktiandi Supaat query.

“HDB also provides general advice on home repair and maintenance, including referring residents to repair contractors that are listed on HDB’s website.”

Flat owners can also ask help from the community, which includes the Community Development Councils (CDCs) as well as the grassroots organisations, it added.
